ILM is a professional body which supports national objectives to ensure that the UK is able to develop leaders and managers of the future, with a particular focus on first line and middle levels. Offering membership services together with leadership and management qualifications and as part of the City & Guilds Group, ILM represents a strategic initiative to support excellence in leadership and management in all sectors and to develop new and appropriate services for organizations and individuals to develop capability.
With almost 100 years experience in the field, ILM has a strong presence in first line and middle management development by providing innovative and responsive management qualifications and learning resources. Together with the strong membership base the organization offers an enhanced provision to the market place. ILM will improve existing frameworks that support individuals and organizations through career long professional development and lifelong learning.
ILM offers a range of vocational, team leading qualifications from level 2 in team leading to level 5 in senior management. Delivered by over 2000 accredited centres including in-house company trainers, private training providers and colleges. ILM is the UK’s professional institute and awarding body that specializes in the needs of First-Line Managers and Team Leaders.
Programmes are based on developing knowledge of management while completing practical assignments and projects in the working environment. Many qualifications bring benefits not only to the learners but also to the employers when projects identify cost savings and improvements in working practices. Chief Executive
After graduating in Accountancy and Business from Kent University in 1977, East Londoner Gary worked his way up from a city firm of Charted Accountants to become Chief Executive of the Institute of Leadership & Management. ILM has a mission to raise leadership and management capability and Gary is passionate in ensuring ILM achieves its mission through practical work based programmes and support.
In partnership with a past president of Electrolux Gary then spent one year establishing a sales franchise business for Electrolux AB of Sweden, helping develop a national sales organization in the UK (1993-1994). He joined the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health as Director of Resources in September 1994. The Chartered Institute was in the midst of a financial reconstruction and Gary played a pivotal role spending eighteen months introducing financial and management disciplines and control before being appointed Managing Director of Chadwick House Group Limited in 1996.
Gary is a commercially focused manager with a long and successful business career. He still lives in East London and is married with three children. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Chemicals and Manufacturers, Chartered Accountants and a member of the Institute of Directors.
Chairman
Ian Forster, OBE, became the first Chairman of ILM at the EGM on17 November 2001. Chairman of NEBS Management since 1998, Ian has been active in NEBS Management since the early 1980s when he joined the Board as Armed Services representative. Up to 1987 he was a serving RAF Officer, retiring then as Air Commodore, from his final post as Director of Training Support and Education and professional head of the RAF Education specialization. From then until 1998 he was Director of Continuing Education at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. A Durham geographer and qualified teacher, his interests are principally vocational training and management development, tempered by an abiding interest in military history.
Deputy Chairman
Jake Tebbs, previously chairman of ISM, has held a diversity of posts in the RAF, mainly in the field of training. He also managed the RAF's Central Training and Consultancy Service. On leaving the Service, he was appointed Director of Studies at Webton Court, the Engineering Industry Training Board's national management and trainer training centre. Subsequently, he joined British Aerospace as an adviser in management and leadership training working primarily in Saudi Arabia. Now an independent training consultant Jake undertakes an interesting range of consultancy work in manager and trainer development.
